Venezuela censures US for aggravating military tension

Article Content

The Venezuelan permanent representative to the United Nations denounced the US for escalating military tension at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on October 10. Saying that there is growing concern that a military attack against his country might happen at once due to the US arms buildup in the waters not far from the coast of Venezuela, he demanded the UN Security Council take a measure to prevent the escalation of tension. The US regards Venezuelans as a target without any ground, he said, emphasizing that his country would exercise the right of self-defence on the basis of international law. Recently the US attacked four ships in the Caribbean and killed 21 civilians, but it did not produce any evidence that they were implicated in a crime, he said. The true purpose of the US leading the situation to a conflict on the pretext of a “struggle against drug trafficking” is to seize control of natural resources, he noted.
